One month in, Thunderbolts* is still climbing the charts at the global box office. Unfortunately for Marvel Studios, it's just taking its sweet time doing so.
Per The Numbers, Thunderbolts* is on track to pass Captain America: The First Avenger at the box office today, becoming the 33rd-highest-grossing MCU movie of all time. Sadly, despite passing one of its predecessors, Thunderbolts* has nothing to celebrate as the movie now looks destined to remain one of the lower-grossing MCU installments. After earning just $4.8 million domestically this past weekend, Thunderbolts* will likely be able to pass the final totals of Black Widow ($379M) and Eternals ($401M) before its theatrical run comes to an end. Unfortunately, it looks like passing Captain America: Brave New World ($413M) may now be a long shot.
AMC Theatres reveals the official runtime for Marvel Studios' The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
After Marvel's The Avengers shattered records in 2012, the MCU became an unstoppable box office force for the next six years, with countless entries grossing over $1 million worldwide. However, following the conclusion of The Infinity Saga in 2019, the superhero genre is no longer bulletproof at the box office, with multiple MCU movies failing to perform as expected. While there have been some impressive hits, notably Deadpool & Wolverine becoming the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever, there have been just as many misses, with 2023's The Marvels failing to crack $200 million at the box office.
Box office struggles aside, Marvel Studios remains confident in the members of the Thunderbolts, who were officially rebranded as the New Avengers at the conclusion of the 2025 movie. John Walker (Wyatt Russell), Red Guardian (David Harbour), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), and Bob (Lewis Pullman) are all confirmed to appear in Avengers: Doomsday, which is currently in production.
Plot details remain heavily under wraps for the crossover movie. Russell recently admitted that he has not yet been allowed to read the script. "I honest to God don't know what I'm doing. I have no clue," he said in May 2025. "I have not read the script. I could die in the first five minutes! I don't know. It would be a nice way to go!"
Jake Schreier discusses the swift elimination of one Thunderbolts* character.
With both of Marvel Studios' 2025 releases, Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts*, so far underperforming at the box office, a lot is riding on the next three MCU movies: The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and Avengers: Doomsday. While the latter two franchises have always been box office hits, Fantastic Four has never had much luck on the big screen, with the 2005 movie being the franchise's highest grosser with a box office of just $333 million. With just under two months to go until First Steps hits theaters, there is still plenty of time for Marvel Studios to market the movie to the masses, which in turn will hopefully increase its box office outlook.
Thunderbolts* is still playing in most theaters.
